The
country's main port inMuara offers direct shipping to Hong Kong,
Singapore and several other Asian destinations. Muara, the deep-water
port, 29 kilometers from the capital, was opened in 1973 and has since
been considerably developed. The facilities at the multi-purpose berth
at Muara are capable of servicing conventional cargo carriers,
self-sustained container carriers and "Ro-Ro" car-carriers.
There is
26,545 sq. metres of warehouse space, 12,950 sq. meters in transit
sheds and 441 sq. metres of cold storage. A three-hectare container
yard and a 2,400 sq. metres container freight station handles
unstuffing operations. Recently, a Free Trade Zone was established in
Muara Port, known as the Muara Export Zone (MEZ), to promote and
develop Brunei Darussalam as a trade hub of the region. The
establishment of MEZ is the initial step toward developing other Free
Trade Zones in the country.

The
recently expanded Brunei International Airport at Bandar Seri Begawan
included the expansion of both passenger and cargo facilities to meet
an expected substantial increase in demand. The new terminal, designed
to handle 1.5 million pass engers and 50,000 tonnes of cargo a year,
is expected to meet demand until the end of the decade.
