Infrastructure (Ports)

The country's main port inMuara offers direct shipping to Hong Kong, Singapore and several other Asian destinations. Muara, the deep-water port, 29 kilometers from the capital, was opened in 1973 and has since been considerably developed. The facilities at the multi-purpose berth at Muara are capable of servicing conventional cargo carriers, self-sustained container carriers and "Ro-Ro" car-carriers.

There is 26,545 sq. metres of warehouse space, 12,950 sq. meters in transit sheds and 441 sq. metres of cold storage. A three-hectare container yard and a 2,400 sq. metres container freight station handles unstuffing operations. Recently, a Free Trade Zone was established in Muara Port, known as the Muara Export Zone (MEZ), to promote and develop Brunei Darussalam as a trade hub of the region. The establishment of MEZ is the initial step toward developing other Free Trade Zones in the country.
