Goa

INTRODUCTION

Goa is tinyemarld on the west coast of it is an all year round tropical paradise with its natural scenic beauty swaying palms, miles of golden sands, lush greenery, an incredible cultural heritage, magnificent churches, temples and monuments, a unique cultural synthesis of East and West.

HOW TO REACH

 

By Air: From Bangalore, Mumbai, Kochi, Delhi, Chennai, Pune by regular flights, Operated by Indian Airlines, Air India and Private Airlines.

By Rail: Goa is connected with Londa junction on the Miraj-Bangalore Sector of south Central Railway.

Konkan Railway linking Mumbai with Mangalore passes through Goa.

By Road: Good motorable roads connect Goa with other major towns via the National Highways NH 4A, NH 17 and NH 17A. Bus Service connect Goa with Bangalore, Mumbai, Pune, Mangalore and other main towns in the neighbouring States.

By Sea: From Mumbai, by Catamaran Services operate by M/s. Damania Shipping (I) Ltd. from October to May only.

LOCAL TRANSPORT

There is a good network of internal bus services. Taxis, autorickshaws and motorcycle taxi are also available throughout Goa.

Launches and ferries ply across unabridged rivers.

PLACE OF ARCHAEOLOGICAL INTEREST

 

Many forts built in the sixteenth century are situated at vantage points. Fort Aguada, Goa's most famous fort, is also its most awesome. Built over a period of eight years, it provided water to ships anchored nearby giving it the name 'Agua' (meaning 'water' n Portuguese). It is now used as the central civil jail. Other places of interest are the Viceroy's Arch at Old Goa-the entrance to the city, the Idalaco Palace, now housing the secretariat and the statue of Abbe Faria the Mystic at Panaji.


PLACES OF WORSHIP

 

TEMPLE

A number of temples with histories dating back to as early as the thirteenth century AD are flyby all over Goa. The Manguesh Temple in Prol is known for its chandelier-adorned interior. Other well-known temples are the Mahalsa temple. The Temple of Shantadurga and Sri Nagesh Temple.

CHURCHES

Built of laterite and lime plaster, the Churches in Goa in are a legacy of the Portuguese. The styles of the renaissance and baroque are combined effectively to make each an architectural masterpiece. The Basilica of Bom Jesus, where the mortal remains of St. Francis Xavier rest. Is by far the best known. Others include the Se Cathedral, Chapel of St. Francis Xavier and the Churches of Our Lady of Rosary.

The Churches at Old Goa have been included in the list of World Heritage Monuments.

MOSQUES

A few Mosques some built as early as 1560 AD, have hamonious proportions and elegant simplicity.

BEACHES

The pride of Goa and a tourist's delight are the score and more golden beaches fringed with swaying palms. These beaches seem to stretch endlessly, welcoming every one who seeks the sun, the sea and the sand. Among the well-known beaches are Colva, Calangute, Miramar, Vagator and Dona Paula.

WILDLIFE SANCTUARIES

There are three in Goa which are located amidst lush greenery. For nature lovers, the Bondla Sanctuary and Bhagwan Mahaveer Sanctuary offer a wide variety of flora and fauna. Bhagwan Mahaveer Cotigao Sanctuary, Mollen Bird Sanctuary, Chorao.
